TRAVEL BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CANADA

Passports_medium

As everyone knows, increased security concerns have lead to new laws regarding travel within North America. For your hockey team's travel planning, please be aware of the following changes to the Border Crossing Procedures which have already been made or will be made over the next several years:

For Entry into Canada you will need:

  • A Passport (always the best, and obtainable at your Post Office); OR
  • An Original or Certified Copy of Birth Certificate (no plain copies) AND a Photo ID (Drivers License or State Personal ID) (FOR ADULTS); OR An Original or Certified Copy of Birth Certificate AND, IF POSSIBLE, a Photo ID (FOR CHILDREN).
  • If you are a non-US citizen, a passport will be sufficient. If you do not have a passport, more research will need to be done to determine the necessary documents to ensure entry and re-entry into the U.S.
  • If only one parent is traveling with a child, you will need a Letter of Authorization from the other parent. If you want to use a prepared letter, go to: www.voyage.gc.ca/main/before/consent_letter-en.asp. This is a template that you can use to fill in the blanks. Signature by attorney or notary may also be helpful.
  • If you have a child traveling with no parents, please do further research to determine necessary documents to ensure entry and re-entry into the U.S.

For Re-Entry into the United States you will need:

  • The Same Documents (see above) that you needed to get into Canada.
  • As of 1/1/2007, a passport WILL BE REQUIRED for air & sea travel.
  • As of 1/1/2008, a passport WILL BE REQUIRED for land crossings as well.

For further information, you can visit the U.S. Department of State website at www.travel.state.gov.
